Join us for a stitching workshop led by the talented textile artist Yemii Haastrup, centered around the theme of Black Joy.
At the heart of this workshop is the powerful African symbol: the Sankofa bird, originating from the Ghanaian Akan tradition. Often depicted as a mythical bird with its head turned backwards and holding an egg in its mouth, Sankofa symbolizes the idea of "going back to get something." It encourages us to reflect on and embrace the positive aspects of our past as we move forward in our journey. This meaningful message will be woven into the stitching works created during the workshop.
Participants will receive a comprehensive stitching kit, complete with all the essentials including needles and thread.

Whether you're a novice or an experienced stitcher, this workshop is tailored for adults of all skill levels, ensuring everyone can enjoy the experience.

Yemii TLC is a Nigerian artist based in St Leonard’s on Sea. She learnt to embroider from her mother at age 8. She studied Fashion Design at Kilburn Polytechnic in the 1980’s. During her studies there she had the opportunity to do a work placement at Dame Zandra Rhodes studio, whose textile designs reminds her of Nigerian designs.
In 2022 she revived her Stitch TLC sewing group. It offers Healing Through Creativity, one stitch at a time. It has been a privilege to share this therapeutic art with others. She has recently started an afterschool sewing group to pass sewing skills on to younger generations.
